Exploring the Science Behind Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is gaining recognition as a transformative therapy for trauma, but what exactly is the science behind its efficacy? Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE is rooted in the understanding of the body’s innate ability to heal from trauma.

What is Somatic Experiencing?

At its core, SE acknowledges the intricate connection between the mind and body in processing traumatic experiences. When an individual experiences trauma, whether it’s a car accident, abuse, or combat, the body’s natural stress response is activated.

However, if the individual is unable to complete this stress response due to overwhelming fear or shock, the trauma becomes stored in the body, leading to a range of physical and psychological symptoms.

How Does SE Work?

SE works by gently guiding individuals to reconnect with their bodily sensations and complete the interrupted stress response. Through somatic awareness and gentle interventions, clients learn to regulate their nervous system, release stored tension, and process unresolved trauma.

The Science Behind SE

What does science say about SE? Research has shown that SE can effectively reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression by regulating the autonomic nervous system and restoring balance to the body.

Studies have also demonstrated changes in brain activity and connectivity following SE therapy, suggesting neurobiological changes associated with healing from trauma.

Discovering SE

By exploring the science behind SE, we gain a deeper understanding of its effectiveness in promoting healing and resilience in trauma survivors.
